Eilean Shona from Loch Moidart – Sat 12th June

The put in was from the old pier in Loch Moidart, an hour and a half after high tide, there was only just enough room to park 8 kayaks before launching.

Through the North Channel 2.5 hours after high water there was plenty of water at the road crossing. The tide was with us but hardly noticable against the stiff breeze. Out into the open water and then on to the beach at Smirisary.

After a break the paddle down to the South Channel was in boistrous conditions with a west wind with just the odd white horse. There was no difficulty going into the channel where it was wind against tide. We then stopped for lunch at the beach on the SW corner of Eilean Shone “shoe beach”.

Back home past the new pontoon at the big house. Then we had a wee adventure in trying to get home by taking the northern side after passing the island of Riska. At half an hour after low water this proved to be a dead end. Two chose a rather muddy portage, the rest retreated to the main river channel. We all got back about the same time.
